Why Snow Creates an Access Barrier

We are a small disabled-owned business that primarily employs clinicians with disabilities. When snow storms hit they can make life really challenging for folks with disabilities.

Take this crosswalk near my home for example. I took this photo today. I've marked the boundaries of the crosswalk in red because it's nearly invisible. It's not soft fluffy snow- but a sheet of compact ice. The blue sections are where the plows have made snow banks. These are roughly 2 feet high an 2-3 feet in depth. They are jagged ice walls that must be climed over. The city considers this intersection clear. Maybe it's clear for cars, but not for people on foot.

It's not clear for wheelchair users.

It's not clear for families with strollers.

It's not clear for folks using crutches, or canes.

It's not clear for blind and low vision folks.

We'd rather reschedule a session than see anyone hurt. We appreciate your patience.
